el diario de la hija de sisi
During the event, new revelations about Empress Elisabeth and her legacy were revealed through the eyes of her daughter
El Huerto del Cura hosted yesterday, 2nd April, the presentation of the book “El Diario de la Hija de Sisi” by Silvia Santibáñez González, a renowned researcher and expert on the life of the Empress. A work that includes the first translation into Spanish of the personal diary of Maria Valeria of Habsburg, favourite daughter of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The text contains numerous photographs, explanations and commentaries by the author, refuting clichés about Sisi, as well as expanding the information with the fruit of her own studies. The event took place under the majestic Imperial Palm, a setting that was also visited by the Empress in 1894.
A great deal of research work
The author was accompanied by Vicente Federico Orts, current director of the garden and member of the family that owns the Huerto del Cura, who gave a magnificent presentation of the author, highlighting her meticulous and tenacious work as a researcher, in particular highlighting her work on the visit of Elisabeth of Habsburg to the Huerto del Cura. For her part, Silvia Santibáñez declared that ‘according to my research, Sisi arrived in Alicante and specifically in Elche, seeking to celebrate the life she almost lost during a mishap with her ship in Spanish waters…’. She added that ‘a visit to Elche was almost certainly part of his plans, following in the footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen’.
Update on the imperial visit
The specialist on the empress also offered her personal view on key aspects of Sisi’s biography, clarified by the material written in the diary of her daughter, Maria Valeria of Habsburg. Likewise, the author revealed new perspectives on the imperial visit to Alicante and Elche in 1894, providing new details of this unique chapter of local history, unknown to the general public until now.
At the end of the conference, attendees were invited to a small reception in the Phoenix Room of the Casa del Huerto, where they had the opportunity to interact with the author and purchase a signed copy of the book.
